Helen, Alan, and Graham are told they are impaired and need fixing. Alan’s father blames his deafness on karma, Graham struggles to learn spoken language, and Helen endures the pain of a cochlear implant. As they begin to question the world around them, three powerful coming-of-age stories unfold, uniting in a struggle against violence, ignorance and oppression. Connected through a shared past, they are transported to one pivotal moment in 1880 when a dangerous ideology was born: one that would impair the way the world views Deaf people for over a century.
Extraordinary Wall of Silence is a bilingual performance in BSL and English, presented in this showcase as a filmed screening.

Hailed by Time Out as “the most important contemporary theatre company,” the UK’s Ad Infinitum has long used theatre to shed light on social issues. For this production, the creative team explored the history of sign language and conducted 40 hours of interviews with Deaf individuals, shaping the piece with imagery of walls and constraints. Performed by three Deaf actors alongside one hearing actor, Ad Infinitum combines its signature physical storytelling with the unique beauty of British Sign Language, creating an unmissable feast for the senses.

Theatre Ad Infinitum, founded in Bristol, UK, is led by Co-Artistic Directors Nir Paldi and George Mann. Comprising members from diverse cultural backgrounds, the company is dedicated to creating innovative and original theatre for multicultural audiences. Since its inception in 2007, Theatre Ad Infinitum has produced numerous critically acclaimed and award-winning works, including Light, which received the 2015 Stage Award, and Translunar Paradise, which enjoyed sold-out performances at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2011 and won the Fringe Review Outstanding Theatre Award.
Not only is the company a multi-award-winning theatre ensemble, but it is also a bold and highly creative pioneer in the performing arts, committed to exploring social and political themes through inventive storytelling and daring experimental styles.
George Mann, a versatile playwright, director, and actor, graduated from Royal Holloway, University of London, and trained at the renowned Jacques Lecoq School of Physical Theatre in Paris. In 2008, he led Theatre Ad Infinitum to critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with the production Behind the Mirror. Subsequently, he participated in the adaptation of Othello, which toured globally and consistently played to sold-out audiences.

George Mann is co-artistic director of Ad Infinitum and a freelance theatre director based in Bristol. George founded Ad Infinitum in 2007 after training at the École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in Paris (2004-06). Over the last 15 years, he has devised, directed, written and performed for the company. George won the National Theatre and Bristol Old Vic’s Quercus Trust Award in December 2014 and was Associate Director at Bristol Old Vic 2015-17.
Credits include: Odyssey, winner of ‘The Stage Best Solo Performer Award’ which toured internationally for 10 years; Translunar Paradise, winner of nine awards, and toured the world including a 3-month tour of Brazil; Light, 4 London runs including a sell-out at Barbican as part of the 2015 London International Mime Festival, and toured internationally for four years; the critically acclaimed Extraordinary Wall [of Silence], which toured the UK and was made into a feature film for international screening during the pandemic; Beautiful Evil Things, number 4 in The Guardian’s ‘Best Theatre of 2022’ which continues to tour nationally and internationally.

Nir Paldi is co-artistic director of Ad Infinitum. A writer, director, performer and facilitator, Nir’s training includes the two-year professional course at École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq. Nir teamed up with George Mann to become co-artistic director of Ad Infinitum in 2009. He directed and co-adapted the company’s multi-award-winning Odyssey. Odyssey won the Stage Award and The Small Scene Theatre Festival Audience Award in Croatia. Nine years after it premiered, Odysseycontinues to tour the world.
As a freelance director working internationally, Nir co-wrote and directed Juana in a Million, which won him a Fringe First Award at the 2012 Edinburgh Festival and a United Solo Festival Award in New York. Juana in a Million continues to play in Mexico City and has just received seven nominations for the Metropolitan Theatre Award including best show and best director.
