接收指令,即时演绎,表演者无需背诵台词,而是由自动提词器实时传送,或通过耳机收取指令,然后对着麦克风与摄像机,用自己的行动及台词演绎指令。大屏幕上实时展现着表演者的特写,每一个细微的表情、每一次眼神的流转,都清晰地呈现在观众眼前。
Instructions is a groundbreaking theatrical work created by the UK-based experimental theatre company SUBJECT OBJECT in collaboration with award-winning playwright Nathan Ellis, recipient of the Best Theatre Award at the Adelaide Fringe and the Innovation Award at the Dublin Fringe. Confronting an inquisitive machine and an equally curious audience, the piece transforms performance into a living exploration of human creativity.
Receiving commands in real time, the performers do not memorize lines. Instead, instructions are transmitted through an automated teleprompter or received via earpieces, guiding their speech and actions. Speaking into microphones, moving under the gaze of cameras, they embody each command with raw immediacy. Their every gesture, every flicker of hesitation or resolve, is magnified on a towering screen—revealing the fragile, electric tension between control and spontaneity, between human intuition and mechanized precision.

This is a theatrical experiment where form and content merge seamlessly—not merely a performance, but a profound philosophical inquiry. It poses a critical question: when we are told what to like, what to say, what to know—do we still possess true freedom?
It is also an immense challenge for the performers—their craft, mindset, and sense of belief pushed to the edge. As technology infiltrates every aspect of the stage, what do we gain, and what do we lose, when we surrender ourselves to the machine?
《指令》于2024年8月在爱丁堡艺穗节首演,并获得苏格兰人报Fringe First大奖。而后在2024年12月受邀参与北京中间剧场科技艺术节,完成了中文版演出。
Instructions premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe in August 2024 and was awarded the Fringe First prize. Later, in December 2024, it was invited to the Beijing Inside-Out Theatre Tech Art Festival, where a Chinese version of the production was staged.

Nathan Ellis is a British writer, the Artistic Director of theatre company SUBJECT OBJECT and is a Creative Associate of the Nottingham Playhouse. He was a member of the Royal Court Invitation Writers’ Supergroup 2018-19. He was a member of the Channel 4 Screenwriting Group 2023 and BBC WritersRoom Drama Room 2021-22.
In 2020 his play SUPER HIGH RESOLUTION was Shortlisted for the Verity Bargate Award. It was performed at the Soho Theatre in 2022 directed by Blanche McIntyre (★★★★★ Daily Mail) and in the repertoire at Staatstheater Kassel in 2023 directed by Manon Pfrunder. His play work.txt (a play without actors) opened at the Soho Theatre in 2022 and received ★★★★★ from The Guardian as well as winning awards at the Adelaide Fringe and Dublin Fringe and being invited to the Caravan International Showcase 2022. The show is currently on an international tour (Australia, Germany, Brazil, Italy, the Netherlands, Canada, Egypt) and has been translated into six languages.
