Juliet & Romeo: A Guide to Long Life and Happy Marriage
Lost Dog
With Lost Dog’s blend of dance, theatre, and comedy this duet reveals the real story of Romeo and Juliet. It turns out they didn’t die in a tragic misunderstanding, they grew up and lived happily ever after. Well, they lived at least.
Now they’re 40ish, at least one of them is in the grips of a mid-life crisis, they feel constantly mocked by their teenage selves and haunted by the pressures of being the poster couple for romantic love. They have decided to confront their current struggles by putting on a performance – about themselves. Their therapist told them it was a terrible idea.
This duet takes on our cultural obsession with youth and our inevitable issues with longevity.
This production reimagines Shakespeare's most iconic tale of tragic love, offering a fresh perspective on cultural notions of teenage romance, the myth of everlasting true love, and the unrealistic expectations placed on marriage. Through the compelling performances of the lead actors, it invites audiences to experience the beauty, humor, absurdity, and sorrow of love in all its complexity.
Blending theatre and dance, Juliet & Romeo uses movement to express the emotional core of its characters. Lost Dog excels at capturing the subtle shifts in emotion through dance—fiery movements in moments of conflict, gentle touches in reconciliation, and even the quiet fractures of a relationship revealed in silence. This unique performance style frees the audience from the confines of language, allowing them to connect directly with the characters’ inner worlds.
Juliet and Romeo premiered in London on Valentine's Day 2018 and played for three weeks at Battersea Arts Centre and The Place before travelling to Edinburgh, Hong Kong and other regions, and debuting with Chinese Mainland audiences at Shanghai's Young Theatre in 2023.
