The Nature of Forgetting

Theatre Re

Tom has just turned 55. As he dresses for his birthday party, tangled threads of disappearing memories spark him into life, unravelling as a tale of friendship, love and guilt.

This ambitious project with actors, mimes and musicians has been created in collaboration with UCL Neuroscience Professor Kate Jeffery and inspired by interviews and workshops with organisations such as the Alzheimer's Society. While the medium of performance may be an unusual resource for the transmission of science, it shines a light on issues around memory that offers a new perspective.

Following sell-out runs in London, New York, Edinburgh, Hong Kong, Seoul, Sao Paulo, Lima, Theatre Re’s The Nature of Forgetting is a powerful and joyous piece about what is left when memory and recollection are gone.

The making of the The Nature of Forgetting started with a question: ‘what is left when memory is gone?’.

Those of us living with dementia lose the ability to form and reconstruct memories. They struggle to think about the future. They are in the present and only in the present. Of course, this is debilitating, but could also be liberating and beautiful. It reminds us of Emily’s line in Our Town: ‘Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it? - every, every minute?’.

If there is one takeaway from the past few years of making, touring, refining and breathing new life into The Nature of Forgetting - it's to remind ourselves to be present, in the moment, and realise life as we live it.

Ultimately, our piece is not about dementia. It is about the fragility of life and that eternal ‘something’ we all share that is left when memory is gone.

In 2017, The Nature of Forgetting premiered at the London International Mime Festival at the Shoreditch Town Hall. In the same year, it performed at the Latitude Festival and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. In 2018, it began its UK tour. In 2019 and 2023, *The Book of Laughter and Forgetting* toured worldwide, performing in countries such as South Korea, Hong Kong, the United States, Taiwan, Mexico, Luxembourg, Slovakia, and mainland China (at the Shanghai Grand Theatre and YOUNG Theatre).
